2009 Teacher Forum |

Last Saturday (9/5) FCD Chinese School successfully held 2009 Teacher Forum together with Yinghua Language School at Fine Arts Center of Rider University. At 9:30AM the forum began and the main speaker Professor Huang Jingzi was introduced to the teachers from these two schools. Prof. Huang is Chair of Department of Curriculum and Instruction, Monmouth University, who is the expert in language education, especially in language teacher training and instruction.
In her speech Dr. Huang was focusing on the topics of teaching vocabulary and reading comprehension. She started with the critical assumptions about learning – goal-oriented, linking new information with prior knowledge, organizing knowledge, strategic and influenced by development. Students need to be shown how to learn, but not just what to learn. In teaching vocabulary, Prof. Huang talked a matter of helping students from apply labels to existing schemata, build on existing schemata to develop entirely new schemata. She provided the criteria for selectivity vocabulary, and pointed out that it is not necessary and impossible to teach every single word. Guidelines and principles as well as strategies in teaching vocabulary were addressed in her speech. For reading comprehension Prof. Huang emphasized the implications of schema theory. From instructional strategies to effective procedure Prof. Huang illustrated the details by using examples and lively language. Dr. Huang also demonstrated classroom management from psychosocial dimension, procedural dimension, physical dimension to behavioral dimension by interacting with the teachers. The teachers from FCD School expressed great interesting in Prof. Huang’s presentation. They believe that Dr. Huang’s instruction and guidance will be very helpful in their teaching practice.
In the afternoon activities, Mr. Yaozu Wang, Principle of School, introduced the school administration and their roles to the teachers, and primarily introduced the school mission and academic goals. The goal of the school is to achieve the standards for the 21st century foreign language learning. The school has done a lot to meet this goal and has made great achievements. Dean of studies, Ms. Ruoqing Jiang, provided the academic requirements in the new school year and the instructions for the first school date. This forum provided very useful information for the teachers at the beginning of new school year. As announced, more teacher forums will be held during the school year.
